Autumn Badgers

Last night I set my trail camera up at one of my local badger setts. In the past I’ve filmed all sorts of behavior at this particular sett and I regularly set my camera up there. No matter how many times I set my camera up there I am always extremely excited to collect my camera the next morning to see what I have managed to film.

As I’ve been filming at this sett for over a year now it is interesting to compare the footage I was getting this time last year to this year. From previous experiences, I find that at this time of the year the badgers are active closer to the sett as they are preparing for the winter. They are also much more interested in the food I leave out.

Almost to the day last year I filmed some of my favorite badger footage. Last nights wasn’t as interesting but I’m hoping to perhaps get some more, like last years, in the next few weeks. Here’s a few clips from last year.

Now here’s some of the clips I got last night.

National Fungus Weekend 2014

This weekend is National Fungus Weekend. The aim of the weekend is for the British Mycologists Society to raise awareness of fungi and fungus science. Fungi is extremely important and without the recycling activities of fungi the world’s ecosystems would soon run out of nutrients. Plants without their fungal mycorrhizal partners to deliver water and nutrients, would not be able to grow and food would quickly become depleted. They also benefit us personally, one popular example of this is penicillin. Overall life on Earth would not exist without fungi!

Along with it being very important for us to survive on Earth, it is also extremely interesting. This morning I went on a Fungi Foray with my local fungi group, The Staffordshire Fungus Group, around the Staffordshire Wildlife Trusts reserve, The Wolseley Centre. It was a very successful foray and we found and identified lots of interesting species. I thoroughly enjoyed myself!

I was also very pleased to find the most interesting and rarest species of the foray. The fungus was a Common Bird’s Nest Fungi, Crucibulum laeve. We were all very excited to find some. Bird’s Nest Fungi are tiny cups, not much bigger then a millimeter by a millimeter, and at first are covered by a cinnamon-yellow membrane. When the membrane erupts it reveals a clutch of flattened white ‘eggs’ which contains the spores. Each ‘egg’ is attached to a cup by a minute cord. They dislodge when raindrops land inside the cup.

You can find out if there’s any events going on in your area by following this link – http://ukfungusday.co.uk/events.php

Here are some photos from the Fungi Foray.

My ‘Wild’ broadcast!

This morning I had a feature on the CBBC show, Wild. The program started at 9am and was on until 10am. My section was showed about 12 minutes into the program and was all about trail cameras and badgers.

The filming took place a few weeks back and I thoroughly enjoyed the process. The filming started at my house then we went down to a badgers which I regularly film and observe the badgers at. I was also very pleased to feature in my local newspaper!

You can view the whole program by click here or you can see the cut down version of my part below.

All sett for a ‘Wild’ Saturday!

I am pleased to announce that this Saturday I will be making my first official TV appearance. The program is called Wild and is on CBBC (channel 120) from 9am – 10am. During that hour I will have my own section all about trail cameras and badgers.

At the start of September they came to film me at my home and at a nearby badgers sett that I observe the badgers at. I thoroughly enjoyed all the filming and can’t wait to see how it all turned out this Saturday. I’m also looking forward to seeing a fellow young wildlife blogger, Findlay Wilde, feature on Wild the week after me (11th of October).

My local news paper have done a story for my TV feature this Saturday and you can see the online version here – http://www.lichfieldmercury.co.uk/Lichfield-wildlife-blogger-make-BBC-TV-appearance/story-23015703-detail/story.html
